Get discovered on TikTok and Instagram search
Younger buyers search TikTok and Instagram to see a product in use before they buy it. Those videos and posts also show up in Google, so social content now does search work.
What the data says
How people use TikTok and Instagram to search in 2026
For younger buyers, social apps are a search habit. Adobe Express's January 2026 survey found 49% of US consumers had used TikTok as a search engine, and 25% of Gen Z respondents said TikTok was effective for finding information, versus 17% of millennials, 12% of Gen X and 5% of boomers. Respondents most wanted video tutorials (61%) and product reviews (45%). Salsify's 2026 research found 73% of Gen Z name social media their favorite place to discover new products and 63% their top research channel.
Social search adds to Google rather than replacing it. In the same Adobe survey, only 4% of Gen Z said they prefer TikTok over Google, down from 8% in 2024, and TikTok's own research found many searchers move between TikTok and traditional search in the same session. Social search is strongest early and mid-journey: spotting a trend, seeing a product in use, and checking whether real people like it. Data on Gen Alpha is still thin, so we do not quote it here.
How TikTok and Instagram search surface content
TikTok says its users run billions of searches a day, and it now sells keyword-based Search Ads that appear in its search results, with keyword match types and negative keywords much like paid search. Its Shop tab, launched in the US in 2023, is a marketplace where people search and browse products, and shoppable videos and LIVEs let viewers buy from tagged products without leaving the app. TikTok does not publish a full ranking formula for organic search results.
Instagram has been investing in content search; head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in April 2025 that content search was an area to improve. Since July 10, 2025, Instagram allows search engines like Google to index public photos and videos from professional accounts whose owners are over 18, with an opt-out in privacy settings. Google has surfaced TikTok, Instagram and YouTube posts in results since at least 2023, when it introduced its Perspectives feature.
How to earn visibility on TikTok & Instagram
Build videos around the words people search
Find the phrases buyers type in TikTok and Instagram search, then say them on screen, in captions and in on-screen text. A clear spoken answer to a real question is more findable than a vague trend clip.
Show the product in real use
Tutorials and honest reviews are what searchers want. Demonstrate fit, size, results, setup and limitations. Use real customers where you can, with their permission.
Use a professional Instagram account
Instagram only allows search engine indexing for public professional accounts. Check that the search engine visibility setting is on, and write captions that describe what is in the post.
Connect content to a shoppable path
If you sell products, set up TikTok Shop and Instagram shopping features where they fit your model, so a search can lead straight to a product page or checkout.
Work with creators who disclose
Choose creators whose audience matches your buyers, and require clear paid-partnership disclosure. The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and buying fake followers or views.
Keep the message consistent across platforms
Use the same product names, claims and prices on social, your site, Amazon and retailers. Google and AI assistants compare these sources, and contradictions cost trust.
It is not just about traffic
Social search builds demand that often converts somewhere else, such as a Google search, an Amazon order or a direct visit days later. AlchemyLeads is a revenue-first AI search agency: we find the searches your buyers run on TikTok and Instagram, plan content that answers them, and measure the effect on branded search, conversions and revenue rather than views alone. We pay particular attention to brands whose buyers skew Gen Z and millennial.
Straight answers
Do people really use TikTok as a search engine?
Yes, many do. Adobe Express's January 2026 survey of 807 US consumers found 49% had used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024. TikTok reports billions of searches a day in the app and said total searches grew 40% year over year in early 2025. Most people still use Google too.
Is TikTok replacing Google for Gen Z?
Not in most cases. In Adobe's 2026 survey, only 4% of Gen Z said they prefer TikTok over Google, down from 8% in 2024. Gen Z uses both: TikTok and Instagram for discovery, trends and reviews, and Google or AI assistants for specifics. That is why social content should be planned as part of search.
Can Instagram posts appear in Google search?
Yes, for eligible accounts. Since July 10, 2025, Instagram lets search engines index public photos and videos from professional accounts (business or creator) whose owners are over 18. It is on by default for eligible accounts, and the account owner can turn it off in privacy settings.
What content gets found on TikTok search?
TikTok does not publish its full ranking formula. Respondents to Adobe's 2026 survey said they most want video tutorials (61%), product reviews (45%) and personal stories (41%). Videos that answer a specific question, use the words people search for, and show the product in real use tend to match that demand.
Should B2B or service companies care about TikTok and Instagram?
It depends on who your buyers are. If decision-makers or end users skew younger, or your offer is visual, short tutorial and proof videos can build familiarity that shows up later as branded search and inbound leads. For many B2B firms, YouTube, Google and AI assistants come first.
