Get found on YouTube and in AI answers

YouTube is where people go to see how something works before they buy it. It is also owned by Google, and its videos are cited in Google's AI answers more than any other website.

The short answerYouTube is a search engine for how-to and instructional questions, and in Ahrefs' September 2026 data it is the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews. Videos with clear titles, descriptions, chapters and transcripts give both viewers and AI systems something specific to reference. For technical B2B products, a well-made explainer can show up in YouTube search, in AI Overviews and inside Gemini.

How people use YouTube to search in 2026

YouTube is the default place to learn how to do something. In his January 2026 letter, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan cited a 2025 Kantar survey in which 93% of US viewers aged 18 to 27 agreed YouTube helps them learn new skills, and Pew Research found in 2025 that 84% of US adults use YouTube. It is no longer just a phone app: Nielsen measured YouTube at a record 14.2% of all US TV viewing in July 2026, the largest share of any media distributor.

For B2B buyers, YouTube answers the questions a spec sheet can't: what the product looks like installed, how long setup takes, how it compares with an alternative and what can go wrong. Engineers and operators search for demos, walkthroughs and troubleshooting before and after purchase. YouTube is also adding conversational search: Ask YouTube, launched in May 2026, answers complex questions by compiling relevant videos, and Alphabet said more than 140 million users engaged with it on the watch page in June 2026.

How YouTube content gets found and cited

Inside YouTube, Ask YouTube uses Google's Gemini models to answer conversational questions by pulling from long-form videos and Shorts, and it lets viewers jump to specific moments in a video. Outside YouTube, Google's Gemini app can use public YouTube information for signed-in users with activity on, according to Google's help center. That means the words attached to a video, its title, description, chapters and transcript, carry much of the weight in whether it can be matched to a question.

Independent data shows how often that happens. Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracking of more than 3 million US queries ranked YouTube as the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews in September 2026, with a 22.9% mention share, and second in AI Mode with 17.8%. A separate Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, published December 2025, found YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility of any factor tested (about 0.737) across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, though Ahrefs notes correlation is not causation.

The playbook

How to earn visibility on YouTube

01

Start from buyer questions

List the how-to, comparison and troubleshooting questions your sales and support teams answer every week. Each one is a video topic with real search demand.

02

Make long-form explainers

Record clear walkthroughs, demos and application videos with an engineer or product expert on camera. Show the product working, not a brand montage.

03

Write titles that match the question

Use the plain-language phrasing buyers use, then write a detailed description that summarizes the answer, the product and the use case.

04

Add chapters and accurate transcripts

Chapters let viewers and Ask YouTube jump to the right moment. Review auto-generated captions so part numbers, specs and brand names are correct.

05

Connect video to your site

Embed each video on the matching product or application page and link back from the description, so search engines can tie the video to your brand and offer.

06

Earn mentions from other creators

Reviews, interviews and trade-show coverage on other channels count as YouTube mentions of your brand. Pitch creators and channels your buyers already watch.

Why it matters

It is not just about traffic

Video works when it shortens the sales cycle: a buyer who has watched your product installed asks better questions and arrives closer to a decision. AlchemyLeads is a revenue-first AI search agency, so we plan YouTube around the questions that come before a quote request, connect each video to the page that converts, and track views through to qualified leads and pipeline. We work with B2B companies between $5M and $150M in revenue, and 95% of new clients since 2020 have stayed longer than 12 months.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Google cite YouTube videos in AI Overviews?

Yes, often. In Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracking of more than 3 million US queries, YouTube was the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews in September 2026, with a 22.9% mention share, ahead of Reddit at 18.5%. It ranked second in Google AI Mode. Videos with clear descriptions, chapters and accurate transcripts give AI systems specific content to match to a question.

Is YouTube really a search engine for B2B buyers?

For how-to and evaluation questions, yes. A 2025 Kantar survey cited by YouTube found 93% of US viewers aged 18 to 27 agree YouTube helps them learn new skills, and that age group is entering engineering and purchasing roles now. Buyers use YouTube to see installation, operation and troubleshooting, which is exactly the content technical sales teams explain on calls.

What is Ask YouTube?

Ask YouTube is a conversational search feature YouTube announced at Google I/O in May 2026. It uses Gemini models to answer complex questions by compiling relevant long-form videos and Shorts into a structured response, with follow-up questions. It launched for US Premium members aged 18 and over, and Alphabet said more than 140 million users engaged with Ask YouTube on the watch page in June 2026.

Do Shorts or long-form videos matter more for AI answers?

For technical buyers, long-form explainers carry more useful detail, chapters and transcript text, which is what AI systems need to match a video to a specific question. Ask YouTube draws on both long-form videos and Shorts. Shorts are useful for reach and for pointing viewers to a full demo, but the long-form video should hold the answer.

How do we measure whether YouTube drives pipeline?

YouTube Studio reports views, watch time and traffic sources, including YouTube search. Link each video to a specific landing page with tracked URLs, then follow those visits to form fills, calls and CRM opportunities. Also check whether your videos appear as sources in AI Overviews and Gemini for the questions you target.
