Google AI search: Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and YouTube
Google is still where most buying research starts, and it now answers in five places at once. Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, the Gemini app and YouTube all belong to the same company and draw on the same index.
What the data says
How people use Google to search in 2026
Google's AI features are adding to search, not replacing it. In April 2026 Alphabet said AI 'continues to drive search usage and queries are at an all-time high,' and in July 2026 Sundar Pichai said AI Mode, like AI Overviews, is driving an incremental increase in overall queries. Google has also merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one experience, so a buyer can read a summary, ask a follow-up and keep going without leaving Search.
For a B2B buyer, Google covers almost every stage. Early questions ('how does vibration monitoring work on a retaining wall') get an AI Overview. Comparison and shortlist questions move into AI Mode or the Gemini app. Demonstrations and installs happen on YouTube, which held a record 14.2% of all US TV viewing in July 2026 according to Nielsen. A brand that shows up in only one of these surfaces is missing most of the journey.
How Google finds and cites sources
According to Google Search Central, AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from pages that are indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet; there are no extra technical requirements and no special AI markup. Google says these features may use 'query fan-out,' running several related searches across subtopics to assemble an answer, which is why they can link to a wider set of pages than a classic results page. Google's July 2026 guidance adds that llms.txt files and special AI text files are not needed.
The Gemini app draws on Google Search as well: Google's help center says Gemini automatically uses public information from Google Search, plus YouTube, Maps, Flights and Hotels for signed-in users who keep activity on. For measurement, Google Search Console added a Generative AI performance report that, since August 31, 2026, shows every site its impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. It does not yet report clicks or the prompts behind those impressions.
How to earn visibility on Google
Win the classic results first
Google says its AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. Fix indexing, crawl and snippet eligibility on the pages that sell, then build depth around buyer questions.
Answer the fan-out questions
Map the sub-questions an AI Mode query splits into (specs, cost, compliance, alternatives) and give each a clear, citable answer on a page built for it.
Publish on YouTube
Turn your strongest sales conversations into long-form videos with accurate titles, descriptions, chapters and transcripts. YouTube is the top-cited domain in AI Overviews in Ahrefs' September 2026 data.
Earn mentions off your site
Industry publications, distributor pages, review sites and forums shape what Google's AI says about a category. Get your brand into the sources it already cites.
Keep entity facts consistent
Use the same company name, products, locations and specifications across your site, Google Business Profile, Merchant Center and directories so Google's systems describe you correctly.
Measure impressions to pipeline
Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for AI impressions, then connect those pages to form fills, calls and CRM opportunities so you can see which answers create qualified leads.
It is not just about traffic
Google is the largest single source of buying research, so it is also where AI visibility most often turns into revenue. AlchemyLeads is a revenue-first AI search agency: we pick the commercial questions your buyers ask across Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and YouTube, build the pages and videos that answer them, and track the results through to qualified leads and pipeline in your CRM. For one industrial ground-monitoring manufacturer, that work earned 4,500 AI citations across 18 pages in six months. We work with B2B companies between $5M and $150M in revenue, and 95% of new clients since 2020 have stayed longer than 12 months.
Straight answers
Is AI replacing Google Search?
Not according to Google's own numbers. Alphabet said in April 2026 that Search queries were at an all-time high, and in July 2026 that AI Mode, like AI Overviews, drives an incremental increase in queries. AI features are adding new ways to search on top of the classic results page, which is why visibility now has to cover both the links and the AI answers that sit above them.
Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?
No. Google's Search Central guidance, updated in July 2026, says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or Markdown to appear in its generative AI features, and that llms.txt neither helps nor hurts. The requirements are the same as for Search: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Content quality and coverage of buyer questions matter far more.
What is the difference between AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini?
AI Overviews are summaries that appear at the top of a normal Google results page. AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search for longer questions and follow-ups; Google has now merged the two into one flow. Gemini is Google's standalone assistant app, which also draws on Google Search and, for signed-in users with activity on, on YouTube and Maps.
Why does YouTube matter for Google AI visibility?
Google owns YouTube, and YouTube is the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews in Ahrefs' tracking of more than 3 million US queries, with a 22.9% mention share in September 2026. It ranks second in AI Mode. For technical B2B products, a clear demo or explainer video with an accurate description and transcript gives Google's AI another source to cite.
Can I see my AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?
Partly. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows every eligible site its impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken out by page, country, device and date. It does not show clicks or the prompts that triggered those impressions, so tie AI-visible pages to conversions in your analytics and CRM to judge commercial impact.
