Where your buyers search now
AI didn't replace search. It added to it. Buyers now research across Google, AI assistants, YouTube, Reddit, Amazon and social apps, using each for a different job.

What the data says
One buyer, many search engines
How people search across platforms in 2026
Search is additive. Alphabet said in July 2026 that its AI features are driving Search query growth, and reported 950 million monthly users of the Gemini app. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at Dev Day in September 2026 that 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. Yet Datos and SparkToro's Q4 2025 data, as reported by PPC Land, still put Google at 73.7% of US desktop searches, with Amazon, Bing and YouTube each ahead of ChatGPT in desktop search activity. Similarweb reports ChatGPT's share of generative AI web traffic fell from about 76% to 53% between mid-2025 and May 2026 as Gemini and Claude grew.
Each platform does a different job. People use Google for broad research and local intent, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot to think through options, Perplexity for sourced research, YouTube for how-tos, Reddit to check what real users think, Amazon to buy things fast, and TikTok and Instagram to spot trends and see products in use. A single purchase often passes through several of them.
How AI platforms find and cite sources
Most AI assistants combine a language model with live retrieval from a search index or partner data, then cite some of the pages they used. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's index; Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own web searches; Amazon's assistant reads its catalog, reviews and Q&A; Reddit licenses real-time data to Google and OpenAI. Each platform page in this hub covers the documented details.
Citations concentrate on a few kinds of sources. Peec AI's March 2026 analysis of 30 million US citations found Reddit and YouTube in the top five on every engine it tested. Similarweb found the share of ChatGPT desktop queries producing a cited answer rose from about 1.6% in June 2025 to about 6.8% in May 2026. Being cited depends on being present, consistent and credible across the sources AI reads, not only on your own site.
Principles for being found everywhere
Map the jobs your buyers give each platform
List the questions buyers ask at each stage and where they ask them. A manufacturer's buyers may start in Google, validate on Reddit and watch YouTube demos; a consumer brand's may start on TikTok and buy on Amazon.
Publish clear, specific answers on your own site
Pages that state what you do, for whom, at what price range and with what proof are easy for both people and AI systems to quote. Vague positioning gets skipped.
Be consistent everywhere AI looks
Keep names, specs, pricing, locations and claims the same across your site, listings, profiles, marketplaces and review sites. Contradictions make AI systems hedge or pick a competitor.
Earn third-party proof honestly
Reviews, community mentions, press and creator content carry weight because you don't control them. Earn them through good work and real participation, with disclosure. Never fake them.
Use each platform's native format
Video for YouTube and TikTok, honest discussion for Reddit, complete listings for Amazon, crawlable pages for Google, Bing and AI crawlers. One generic asset rarely works everywhere.
Measure pipeline, not just traffic
AI answers often influence buyers before any click. Track AI referrals, branded search, self-reported attribution and CRM outcomes so you can see which platforms produce qualified leads and revenue.
It is not just about traffic
Visibility across platforms only matters if it produces qualified buyers. AlchemyLeads is a revenue-first AI search agency for companies doing $5M to $150M in revenue. We map where your buyers search, fix how Google, AI assistants and the platforms they trust describe you, and connect that work to leads, pipeline and revenue in your CRM. One industrial ground-monitoring manufacturer earned 4,500 AI citations across 18 pages in six months and 170% more requests for quote, and 95% of new clients since 2020 have stayed longer than 12 months.
Straight answers
Is AI replacing Google search?
Not according to current data. Alphabet said in July 2026 that its AI features are driving Search query growth, and Datos and SparkToro found Google still handled 73.7% of US desktop searches in Q4 2025. AI assistants are growing quickly on top of that, so the job is to be visible in both rather than choosing one.
Which AI search platform matters most for my business?
It depends on where your buyers research. Google and its AI features reach the most people. ChatGPT has the largest AI assistant audience, Perplexity suits research-heavy buyers, YouTube owns how-to searches, Reddit shapes trust, Amazon dominates fast product purchases, and TikTok and Instagram lead discovery for younger buyers. Start with the platforms your best customers name.
Do AI referrals actually convert?
Studies suggest they often convert better than average search traffic, though volumes are still small. Semrush's 2025 study estimated the average AI search visitor is worth 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor based on conversion rate, partly using modeled projections. Results vary by industry, so measure your own AI referrals against CRM outcomes.
How do AI assistants decide which brands to mention?
Most combine a language model with live web retrieval or partner data, then cite some of the sources used. They lean on sources with broad, credible coverage. Peec AI found Reddit and YouTube in the top five cited domains on every engine it tested in March 2026. Clear, consistent information across trusted sources improves your odds.
Can an agency guarantee AI visibility?
No one can honestly guarantee placement in AI answers or search results, because each platform controls its own systems and they change often. What an agency can do is improve the clarity, consistency and credibility of your information wherever buyers and AI systems look, and measure whether that produces qualified leads and revenue.
