AI engines can’t fill out a form, and they struggle to read a PDF that’s embedded from another site. So the content you guard most closely is the content ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews never see. We rebuilt our own pitch deck and culture manifesto from embedded files into web pages on September 30, 2026. In the two weeks after, AI answers used our pitch deck page as a source 23 times, up from once in the 45 days before. Here’s why it works, what to keep open, and how to keep “PDF download” as a conversion.
What gated content is, and why AI search skips it
Gated content is any asset a visitor can only reach after giving up something, usually an email address in a form. Think ebooks, whitepapers, research reports, recorded webinars, product catalogs and spec sheets. For years it was the standard B2B lead engine: publish an asset, put a form in front of it, hand the leads to sales.
AI search runs on the opposite idea. When a buyer asks ChatGPT which vendors to shortlist, the engine pulls from pages it can fetch and read in seconds. A crawler that hits your gated landing page reads the headline and the teaser paragraph, then stops at the form. Your data, your methodology and your point of view sit on the other side. The engine builds its answer from whoever left that information open, and that’s usually a competitor.
We cover the mechanics in how AI search works and in the three ways AI uses your content. The short rule: if a crawler can’t fetch it as text, it can’t cite it.
Gated vs. ungated content: what to keep open
If a piece of content helps a buyer understand the category, evaluate you or pick you over someone else, keep it public. That’s the material AI engines need to recommend you accurately.
Plans, ranges and what drives cost. We publish our pricing, and AI engines now quote it back correctly.
The problem, the work and the measurable result. All of ours live on our reviews and case studies page.
Dimensions, materials, tolerances, certifications and options, written as text and tables on the page.
How you stack up against alternatives, including building in-house.
Basic questions should never require a work email. Write them answer-first.
The headline findings, charts and methodology. The full report can still sit behind a form.
Gates still make sense for a short list: a personalized audit, a private calculator, licensed analyst reports with syndication rules, or anything that needs a salesperson to deliver. Everything else is expertise you want AI to repeat.
Where we still use a gate
We gate one thing ourselves. Our AI Visibility Checker fetches your site as six different AI crawlers, checks your ChatGPT visibility and Google AI Overview readiness, finds your citations and mentions, and scores how ready you are for AI search. Anyone can run it and see their score for free. The full five-part breakdown, plus the live “recommends you” results from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI, takes an email.
That’s a deliberate call. We spent two months building the checker, and the full report is the kind of personalized audit we’d normally deliver on a paid engagement. We think that’s worth an email. The tool page, the free score and the explanation of how it works all stay open, so AI engines can still read about the tool and describe it.
Our other free tools have no form at all: the PPC Keyword Combination Tool and the AI Mode query classifier for Search Console. As we build new tools, we plan to ungate the checker too.
The quieter gate: PDFs
For most of our clients, the biggest gate on the site is a PDF. Digital catalogs, brochures, spec sheets, capability statements and “features and benefits” decks often hold the best information a company has, sitting in PDF files embedded on the site from Figma, Issuu, Google Drive, Dropbox or a flipbook viewer.
To a person, an embedded PDF looks like content on your page. To an AI crawler, it’s usually a gate with no form:
- It lives on someone else’s domain. An iframe from an external host pulls content from that host. Your page holds a frame and little else, so there’s almost nothing on your URL to read or cite.
- Viewers render with JavaScript. Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML and don’t run scripts. Flipbooks and slide viewers often load their pages with JavaScript, or as images, so the crawler sees an empty box.
- Designed PDFs often have no real text. Exported decks and scanned brochures can store words as images or outlines. There’s nothing to extract.
- There’s no structure. No headings that map to buyer questions, no schema, no internal links and no page title worth citing.
- The file wins the wrong battles. When search engines do index a PDF, it can outrank your page and drop visitors onto a file with no navigation, no form and no way to reach sales.
- Heavy files slow the page down. A 20 MB brochure in an iframe hurts load time for every visitor.
A lot of our AI SEO work starts here. We hunt down legacy company information hidden in PDFs, then design real web pages around it. The look of the original document stays. The content becomes text, tables and structured data that people and AI can both read.
Our own before and after
We had the same problem on our own site. Our agency overview and pitch deck was a Figma Slides deck embedded from Figma’s servers. Our culture and company manifesto was a PDF in an iframe. Both looked great and both were heavy. To a crawler, both were close to empty.
On September 30, 2026, we rebuilt both as web pages. Same design intent, same content, now written as thousands of words of real text with headings, proof and links. Here’s what changed in the first two weeks.
| Signal | Before (embedded file) | After (web page) |
|---|---|---|
| Pitch deck page used as a source in AI answers | 1 in 45 days | 23 in 14 days |
| AI crawler visits to the pitch deck page | 1.0 a day | 1.6 a day |
| Live ChatGPT fetches of the pitch deck page | 0 | 2 |
| AI crawler visits to the culture page | 0.8 a day | 1.3 a day |
| PerplexityBot visits to the culture page | 4 in 16 days | 12 in 14 days |
Sources: AI answer citations from Searchable (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity tracking), August 16 to October 13, 2026. Crawler visits from our Cloudflare logs, September 14 to October 13, 2026. “Before” ends September 29.
The pitch deck page now shows up as a source when people ask Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity how to hire AlchemyLeads, how to book a proposal call and how our results compare with larger agencies. Those are the exact moments a buyer is deciding. Before the rebuild, the engines had nothing on that URL to work with.
The culture page hasn’t been cited yet, and we’ll be honest about that. What changed is how often AI crawlers read it: Perplexity’s crawler visits tripled. One more detail from the logs: before the rebuild, Google and Bing fetched the manifesto PDF file itself 29 times in 16 days. Our culture content was being indexed as a loose file, detached from the culture page. Since the rebuild, search engine fetches of that file have dropped to zero, and the page gets the attention instead.
Two weeks is a short window, and we were improving other parts of the site at the same time. The direction is still clear, and it matches what we see on client sites.
“Download PDF” can still be your conversion
Some teams track PDF downloads as a lead signal and don’t want to lose it. You don’t have to. Make the web page the home of the content, then put a download button on it.
- Track the button as a key event. GA4’s enhanced measurement already logs clicks on PDF links as a
file_downloadevent. Mark it as a key event, or fire a custompdf_downloadevent through Google Tag Manager, and send it to your CRM. We wire this into HubSpot as part of our CRM and tech integrations work. - Put any gate on the download button. If you want an email for the full PDF, put a short form on the button. The page stays open for buyers and AI crawlers, and the people who want the deep dive still raise their hand.
- Point the PDF back to the page. Add a canonical HTTP header on the PDF that points to its web page, or noindex the file, so search engines rank the page with your navigation and contact form.
You keep the conversion, and you get a page that ranks, gets cited and shows up in attribution. Much of the traffic it earns from AI answers will arrive as direct traffic, so watch that number too.
Where we see PDF-heavy sites most
- Hospitality: menus, event packages, wedding brochures and group sales kits. See our hospitality marketing work.
- Events and catering: catering menus, venue packages and sponsorship decks, the kind of content behind our corporate event catering case study.
- Hard tech and manufacturing: datasheets, line cards, capability statements and product catalogs. It’s a big part of why we bet on hard tech and our industrial and manufacturing and aerospace and engineering practices.
- Commercial real estate: offering memorandums, property flyers, floor plans, site plans, amenity sheets and leasing brochures.
In every one of these industries, the PDF holds the details buyers actually ask AI about: capacity, pricing ranges, specs, locations and what’s included.
How we rebuild a PDF into a web page
- Find every file. Crawl the site, search Google for your domain’s PDFs and check server or Cloudflare logs for which files bots and people actually request. Include files hosted on Figma, Drive, Dropbox and Issuu.
- Rank them by buyer value. Specs, pricing context, capabilities and proof go first.
- Extract the content. Pull the text, numbers and tables out of the file, and rewrite anything that only made sense as a slide.
- Design the page with intent. Keep the visual identity of the original document. Build it from text, tables and compressed images, so it loads fast.
- Structure it for questions. One heading per buyer question, specs in tables, an FAQ, schema that matches the content and links to related pages. Add it to your llms.txt and entity map if you keep them.
- Keep the download. Add the PDF button with key-event tracking, and point the file to the page with a canonical header.
- Measure it. Watch AI crawler visits in your logs, AI citations in a tracker and AI conversations in Search Console. We use the stack described in our AI SEO tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is gated content?
Gated content is any asset a visitor can only access after filling out a form or paying, such as an ebook, whitepaper, report, webinar or product catalog. Companies use it to collect leads. The tradeoff is that search engines and AI crawlers can’t get past the form, so the content can’t rank or be cited.
Can AI Overviews cite gated content?
Not the part behind the gate. Google’s AI Overviews and other AI engines can only use what their crawlers can fetch, which for a gated asset is usually the landing page’s headline and teaser. Publish the key findings openly on the page if you want them cited.
Can ChatGPT read PDFs on my website?
Sometimes. A text-based PDF hosted on your own domain can be fetched and read. A PDF embedded from another host, shown through a JavaScript viewer or saved as images is often unreadable to AI crawlers. Even when a PDF is read, the citation points to a loose file with no navigation or contact path. A web page is the safer home for the content.
Gated vs. ungated content: which is better for B2B lead generation?
Keep evaluation content ungated: pricing context, case studies, specs, comparisons and FAQs. Reserve gates for high-value assets like personalized audits or licensed reports. AI engines now shape vendor shortlists before buyers ever fill out a form, so being cited usually does more for pipeline than collecting another unqualified email.
Should I noindex my PDFs?
If the same content lives on a web page, yes, or add a canonical HTTP header on the PDF that points to the page. Either way, search engines send people to the page, where your navigation and forms live.
How do I track PDF downloads as conversions without gating the content?
Put the content on a web page and add a download button for the PDF. GA4’s enhanced measurement records PDF link clicks as a file_download event, which you can mark as a key event, or you can fire a custom pdf_download event through Google Tag Manager and pass it to your CRM.
